How the journey to Christ the Redeemer works
Christ the Redeemer stands on top of Corcovado, a mountain in Tijuca National Park. With either transport option, you first get to a boarding point, then travel up the mountain:
- The Corcovado Train, called Trem do Corcovado in Portuguese, is a railway that climbs through the forest. It starts and ends at a station in Cosme Velho, a neighborhood in Rio. You arrange your own journey to that station.
- The official vans travel by road and are operated by Paineiras Corcovado. You can board in Copacabana or at Largo do Machado, where there is a metro station. The operator also sells a shorter van journey from the Paineiras Visitor Center, partway up the mountain; you arrange your own transport to that visitor center and back.
For a first visit, choose the train if you want the forest railway to be part of the experience. Choose a city van departure if its boarding point makes the journey easier from where you are staying. Either way, check that everyone in your group can manage the final approach: during the current access works, there is a section of stone stairs near the statue.
Visiting during the 2026–2027 works
Christ the Redeemer remains open. The escalators serving the upper approach were switched off on August 3, 2026 for replacement. In its current works notice, Tijuca National Park estimates completion by the end of May 2027, so plan around the stairs until a reopening is confirmed.
The regular elevators still cover the lower part of the climb. From the second floor to the monument’s viewing platform, there are 80 stone steps. The park has also halved the maximum number of visitors allowed at the summit at the same time, with less space available for circulation. These arrangements apply to visitors arriving by train, van or on foot.
Book with that reduced capacity in mind. If anyone in your group needs assistance on stairs, read the accessibility section below before choosing a date.
Train or van: which should you book?

With any of these tickets, you book the transport and monument admission together. The difference is how much of the journey you arrange yourself: a Paineiras departure leaves you responsible for getting from the city to the visitor center and back.
Take the train for the journey through the forest
The Trem do Corcovado leaves from Rua Cosme Velho, 513, in Cosme Velho. Use that station address when arranging a taxi or app ride. If traveling by public transport, follow the operator’s directions from Largo do Machado metro station, which include an onward bus journey to Cosme Velho.
Reserve a departure time, then work backward to plan your arrival: the train requires check-in at least 40 minutes before departure. Regular departures run every 20 minutes between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., subject to service changes. Use the booking calendar for the services available on your date.
This is the route to choose if the railway journey through the Atlantic Forest is part of the appeal. Leave enough room in the day to enjoy the outing without a restaurant reservation or another timed ticket immediately afterward.
Take the city van for a convenient departure point
The official van stops are at Praça do Lido in Copacabana and Largo do Machado, in front of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Glória. Choose the one that fits your accommodation and the rest of the day.
Allow time to find the stop and get ready to board. Paineiras recommends arriving 15 minutes before the booked time. Your ticket returns you to the same departure point, so a Copacabana booking also brings you back to Copacabana.
For someone staying near Praça do Lido, walking to the van can make the choice straightforward. For a visitor arriving at Largo do Machado by metro, the van avoids having to arrange the additional connection to the train station.
Start at Paineiras only with a return plan
You can arrange your own transport to the Paineiras Visitor Center and board the official van there. Paineiras Corcovado operates the authorized vans for the final road approach to the monument, and there is no parking on site. If you book a private transfer, establish where it leaves you and how you will make that final connection.
Before choosing this option, account for both directions between your accommodation and Paineiras. For a hired driver, establish the return meeting point and any waiting charge. For an app ride, leave room in the plan for arranging the journey down.
How much do tickets cost?
Use these adult reference fares to compare the routes, then select your date and visitor category in the booking calendar:

Book the train or official van for your chosen date and visitor category. The van reference fares help compare the routes; the final price varies by date and boarding point.
At those reference fares, the difference between the two van options is R$45 per adult. For two adults who could otherwise walk to the Copacabana stop, starting at Paineiras saves R$90 on the tickets. Both journeys to and from Paineiras would need to cost less than R$90 combined for the cheaper tickets to reduce the total outing cost.
Traveling with children? The train’s child ticket costs R$107 for ages 7–11. Children aged six and under travel free with proof of age, seated on a guardian’s lap.
Paineiras also offers free admission through age six, but you need to collect a complimentary ticket at the ticket office with proof of age. For other concessions, check the eligibility and documentation rules for the exact category before paying.
Pick a time around the view—and leave a buffer
The view is a large part of the visit, so consider the forecast alongside the available ticket times. Cloud around the summit can obscure the panorama even when the attraction is operating.
For lighter visitor flow, Paineiras currently suggests the afternoon, particularly from 2 p.m.. Crowds will still vary from day to day, so choose a time that also gives you comfortable arrival and return margins.
As a planning allowance, set aside half a day from your accommodation and back, including getting to the departure point, check-in, transport, the upper approach and time at the monument. This is room in your itinerary, rather than a stated tour duration. During the works, avoid building the day around an assumed short queue.
If visibility matters more to you than visiting on a particular date, compare the weather outlook before committing and read the change policy. The train’s rescheduling policy lists a 10% fee more than 24 hours before departure and 30% less than 24 hours before departure. Do not assume a cloudy forecast gives you a free date change.
Accessibility: check the final 80 steps before booking
During the works, an elevator ride does not provide an uninterrupted step-free route to the viewing platform. Stair-climbing equipment is available for visitors with reduced mobility. Before relying on it, check the current accessibility arrangements, particularly these limits:
- It cannot operate in rain or on wet surfaces.
- The wheelchair-carrying equipment accommodates standard wheelchairs. Other chairs, including powered models, may require the visitor to transfer to a standard chair.
- That equipment has a 150 kg combined person-and-wheelchair limit. The separate stair-climbing chair has a 130 kg limit.
Under the park’s assistance arrangements, trained staff operate the equipment, while relatives or companions transfer the visitor between chairs when needed. Confirm the support required for your group with the chosen operator before booking, including what happens if the steps are wet.
Can you hike up or book a guided tour?
The park’s access guide allows visitors to arrive on foot and buy monument admission at the upper ticket office. Hikers are subject to the same summit-capacity restrictions during the works. Choose hiking because you want a hike and have checked current trail conditions, access and your return plan. A smaller admission bill alone is a poor basis for choosing the route.
A guided visit can help with transport, interpretation or fitting Corcovado into a wider day. The park’s access guide also identifies authorized local visitor guides. Before booking a tour, ask which transport it uses, whether monument admission is included, where pickup and return happen, and what happens if weather changes the plan. Check any advertised priority access against the actual ticket terms.
Before you leave
Save your ticket where you can retrieve it, check the boarding address, and bring the documents required for your purchase or concession. Both the train’s visitor instructions and the van’s booking conditions ask for the payment card and the cardholder’s identification when validating a purchase. Check arrangements in advance if somebody else is paying for your visit.
Wear shoes suited to steps and carry water and sun protection. If the visit follows time at the beach, change out of swimwear: Paineiras’ visitor rules prohibit entering in bikinis or swim briefs.
For a straightforward first visit, the train and the city vans both make sense. Let the experience you want and the departure point decide, then give the mountain a comfortable place in your day.
